I thought I’d better let you know,

The reason I’ve gone missin;

I'm where there’s ten-pound angelfish,

That’s right I’ve just gone fishin;

A man named Peter at some gates

Asked if I had permission,

My angler’s licence got me in,

And now I’m happy fishin;

The waters here are crystal clear;

Better than the Pickerel river,

You get a bite at every cast,

In this lovely Heaven's river;

My old Dad’s casting by my side,

And my dear Mom I’m a kissin;

Don’t worry all I’m happy here,

Yes I’ve simply just gone fishin.

Sarah Margaret Manning

“Sally”

July 17th, 1949 – June 3rd, 2014

Cherished daughter of Nancy Jane Fort Manning and the late Reverend Robert Manning, beloved companion of Katja Mathys, and precious sister of Bobby and Anne, Jim and Marion, Janie and Michael, Mary Anne, Nancy and Jim, and Suzanne and the late Michael Ward. Revered auntie to a well-trained ‘team’ of nephews and nieces. Loved dearly by her extended American family, her Godchildren, and her kaleidoscope of friends.

Sally was born on a sunny summer morning in Toronto overlooking the shores of Lake Ontario and passed away on a same sunny morning close by the waters of Georgian Bay and her home on McKellar Lake. She touched the lives of so many with her tenacious spirit, masterful skill, quirky humour, and mischievous smile manifested in her enduring love of sport and competition, especially as a President’s XI international field hockey champion (1979), in her engagement with the wilderness in Canada’s far north and across the world, in her creative writing, in her teaching, guidance, and community service at Thornhill and Thornlea Secondary Schools, and in her curiosity, generosity, and concern for everyone she met. Her determination to live well is reflected in her inspiring ‘walking’ battle with cancer.

We will always be grateful for the kindness and dedication given to our Sally by the caregivers in the Palliative Care Unit at the West Parry Sound Health Centre, especially the nursing and Hospice staff. In lieu of flowers please join Sally in her living legacy through a donation to the West Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation for Palliative Care at www.wpshcf.com

The Celebration of Sally’s life will be held at The McKellar Community Centre on Thursday June 26, 2014 from 2 – 5 PM.  Cremation arrangements entrusted to the Torrance Funeral Home.  There will also be a second celebration in Toronto later in the summer.

Prior to Sally’s interview with CBC Radio North in late May to discuss the literary award she had inaugurated for aboriginal non-fiction writing, she was asked what it was like to continue writing after being diagnosed with cancer. She replied:

“The telling of these experiences when you find out you have cancer reflects a choice you make. When I first heard I had cancer, it was transformative. My life would never be the same again. It would wrap around health care, doctors, and appointments. To live with cancer takes energy, focus, passion, and hard work. I made a decision to go on living with cancer, not to let cancer determine the direction my life was going to take.”
